Read to Self
Read to Self should take place daily for at least 15-25 per day (depending on the grade level). Students should be using their iPick book for Read to Self. During this time, students implement the reading strategy focus for that day or week, as well as others previously learned.
Students first choose a collection (to avoid too much "choosing time") of iPick books, which are books that are:
-self-selected
-on their level
-can be of a genre based on the current unit of study
Student reading levels can be determined based on benchmark assessments. Students can also take part in the process by using the Five-Finger Rule. Teachers can monitor reading level progression with running records or with conferencing.
I choose a book.
Purpose- Why do I want to read it?
Interest- Does the book interest me?
Comprehension- Am I understanding what I am reading?
Know- Do I know most of the words? (Use the 5 finger rule)
