Work on Writing
Getting students to get excited about writing is a challenge. However, allowing for choice is a helpful way to increase that excitement. Students can keep their own journal and either write on a topic of their choice or ideas for writing topics on index cards or popsicle sticks can be provided. Some teachers prefer to have one notebook for all students' writing entries for organizational purposes which also allows students to browse each others entries. Others prefer to offer a "carousel" writing option. Having different colored notebooks with different topic ideas, including one "wildcard" option for students to choose is also a teacher favorite because kids love some autonomy!
In cases where Writing Workshop may be taking place at another time during the literacy block, Work on Writing time may be used as follow up or may have a "read and respond" focus instead.
