Reading Workshop
Reading Workshop is about teachers teaching reading strategies (not teaching books) and students authentically using those strategies immediately in their self-selected, leveled books.
Components of Reading Workshop
Read Aloud/Shared Reading - 5 minutes
This is where the teacher uses a mentor text to model a reading strategy.
Mini-Lesson - 10-15 minutes (video example) (MS video example)
This is where the teacher makes the connection to the read aloud and the strategy exemplified.
A model can be used to show the usage of the strategy and notes can be taken on an anchor chart.
Then the teacher allows time for a quick partner practice with that strategy. - Turn and Talk
Students can take notes in their reader's notebook (upper grades) or teachers can provide those notes. A mini-lesson is not necessary to do everyday. Mini-lessons are selected based on the unit of study and the needs of the students at that time. There are usually 3 mini-lessons per week.
Independent Reading and Conferring - 20-30 minutes (MS video example)
Now the students have the opportunity to try out the new strategy in their current reading for authentic application. Students should be engaged in daily self-selected, leveled reading for at least 20-30 minutes (depending on age and stamina).
Teachers conference with students independently or in strategy groups (using a form, notebook, or app). Strategy usage should be discussed and a component of it should be praised. Each conference has a focused teaching point and ends with a student goal. Students can record that goal in their notebook or on a board or form.
Sharing - 5 minutes
Students have the opportunity to share their books and reading strategy implementation in a whole group, small group, or peer sharing scenario.
