Try asking parents to donate new books or books from their own shelves that their children have outgrown. Pictures books serve as fantastic mentor texts, allowing you to model reading and writing strategies.
After leveling the books, sort them by genre when you place them on the shelves. This allows students to be aware of genre choices when making their selections. It also allows for privacy, being able to first search by interest and then by level. When we assess the errors students make when they read, we can direct our instruction to introduce or strengthen their cueing strategies. Strategy groups can be formed to address these needs. I always try to find novels where personification is used and the main characters are animals. Those books usually have appropriate content, rich language, and strong themes.
